1st issue January 4, 2007Welcome to Your Guide to the Life You Love(TM), my complimentary newsletter/Ezine that shows up at the right time, on a regular basis, with tools, tips and simple perception shifts to help you enrich your life, expand your horizons and experience Your Personal Definition of success. Enjoy! It's openhearted but not too sweet, slightly tangy and a bit offbeat--and always includes some cool mind candy with that hopeful flavor. Pass along some of your favorites and I'll share the tasty (and tasteful) ones. This is the 8th year I'm teaching 'Get the Life You Love' at Emory University's Center for Lifelong Learning--because we teach what we most need to learn. Step by step, I'm learning to lighten up. And right now I'm engaged in an incredible dance, called Resistance Rock 'n' RollMore than a year ago I VOWED to launch this Ezine to stay in touch. That's right-it's been transferred from list to list, and I've resisted putting it out there, but here's the cosmic joke: What we resist, persists! It's Day Four of 2007. Are you engaged with one of those pesky New Year's resolutions in Resistance Rock 'n' Roll right now? Already hating yourself for breaking your vow? Here are some ideas how to Get Over Your Bad SelfLast night at Village Writers Group in Atlanta I led a workshop called 'Blast Your Inner Writer Into High Gear for the New Year.' Doc Hollywood (author, philanthropist and bon vivant Neil Shulman) showed up. He asked how many years it took for me to publish my multi-award winning first book, BACK TO THE GARDEN: Getting from Shadow to Joy, after I'd done all kinds of therapy to get over early negative comments by my parents about my creative writing. Thirty years! Even I was amazed. That's a few wasted decades, eh? The group discussed several ways that Creative People (which is ALL OF US) honor ourselves in creating the lives we love: *Engage the observer (imagine a non-judgmental 'mini-me' on your shoulder saying, "This too shall pass, my friend!") It's a Zen technique for calming the mind, watching thoughts flow past and becoming aware of when we're beating ourselves up. Enter the AnteaterAs you become aware of those Automatic Negative Thoughts (ANTs), unleash the anteater and suck 'em up--or do like another friend does and smack 'em down! Learning to tame the monkey mind is perhaps the biggest challenge in life. Fall Down Seven Times, Get Up EightOne of my favorite Japanese proverbs says it all. Even if this is the 30th time you've quit smoking or started a program of healthy eating, meditation or daily walks, give yourself permission to start over again every day, every moment, breath by breath. Power is in the moment! Let Go of Odious ComparisonsWhen teaching yoga classes I mention our cardinal rule to the newbies: "No Pose Envy." We all start from where we are and proceed from there. As Krishna (the Hindu God) said to Arjuna, the young warrior, "We do not leap to the absolute." We get there one step at a time. If other people seem too perky and perfect to be true, remember, they probably are. Everyone experiences occasional turbulence and eddies--it's the natural flow of life. Join My Celebration!Writer's Digest recently notified me that my book BACK TO THE GARDEN: Getting from Shadow to Joy was chosen as an Honorable Mention in the Inspirational category of the 14th Annual Writer's Digest Self-Published Book Awards, so I'm offering an internet special! Visit www.PatriceDickey.com and the book is yours for only $14.95 plus shipping and tax where applicable. The cover letter said, "Competition was particularly fierce this year so (the) accomplishment is truly impressive."—I'll toast that! Here's what Judge #39 said about BACK TO THE GARDEN. "This really is a delightful book, full of pithy, wise, fun, real, honest, short selections, each to the point and with a message one can carry away to ponder. Written by a woman who has obviously Been There, the book shares, directs, reflects wisdom and understanding at every possible turn—and quite painlessly. The writing is witty, accessible, easy and enjoyable to read, chatty or conversational, on universal subjects, what we will all encounter as we lead full lives. Dickey offers effective ideas, new fresh perspectives, techniques or tools to deal with these everyday problems or situations... The subject titles are fresh and catchy; and the interior design and cover are attractive. I like this book." I'm also honored to mention that the book has previously won Inspirational, Spiritual, Aging, Death&Dying, and 1st Place Nonfiction awards from the IPPYs 2006, Best Books 2006 (two categories) and Atlanta Writers Club, respectively. |
