DOG DAY AFTERNOON

When it's frying on the outside, I do whatever it takes to keep that cool breeze blowing on the inside--especially in my mind.

Atlanta is in the midst of a too-long hot streak with temps in the high 90s and 100s. During each yoga class I teach I play the sounds of a cool mountain waterfall tumbling over stones. Adjusting our minds is half the battle.

I encourage people to take things a little easier--take a signal from nature--the dog days are not the time to push. Give yourself a respite.

Everything goes in cycles, and soon enough the cool of fall brings renewed energy and a time to initiate new projects.

So in the doldrums, what to do? Unload the old--clear out your space!

Here's a chapter from my award-winning book, BACK TO THE GARDEN: Getting from Shadow to Joy about the benefits of lightening your load.

BOXES, FENG SHUI, AND THE MIDDLE GROUND

I learned in my study of Feng Shui that three of the places where my father's ever-expanding hoardings were stashed are among the most critical to maintain clearance and order: the hallways, under the bed, and in the basement.

If one keeps especially these areas clear, positive energy flows, opening the way for good mental and physical health.

Although the single hallway in my home is slick as a whistle, lacking even a runner along its hardwood floor, I pause to ponder the challenge that is the storage area of my lower level--a garage below my bedroom.

I confess. I am a box collector. The idea of actually going to a store and paying money for a packing carton, or simply not being able to locate the box of perfect size and heft for any mailing occasion--a Tiffany's re-use for that elegant effect, or a sturdier shipping carton complete with its layers of bubble wrap--is quite alarming to me. And how could anyone possibly think of discarding a hand-embroidered box from Asia!

UNCLUTTER YOUR SEXUALITY

But regarding these three key areas: under the beds, in the hallways and basements, Feng Shui wisdom indicates several things. The area beneath beds should be clear because it relates to creative energy, sexuality and the unconscious. Clutter here may hamper sleep, creativity and fertility.

How long have those plastic containers filled with sweaters and mothballs, or boxes of shoes, or papers, or empty suitcases been stored beneath the bed? Or everyday debris, magazines and garbage that's shoved out of sight, affecting your ovulation, sperm count, or the progress on your work of great literature?

How can we let anything as mundane as sweaters-in-a-can crowd the psychic space where dreams are woven, the place where magic occurs, where wonders are conceived--the access point between the ego and the greatest depths of the soul? Only magic is welcome here!

Even though dust bunnies also seem to propagate, well, like bunnies, they can easily be whisked away, releasing energy flow.

HALLWAYS: KEY TO YOUR QI

Next, look at your hallways, which are akin to the body's arteries. If energy (qi) cannot flow freely through the house, then life begins to stagnate.

The basement is a reflection of the subconscious mind.

Have you ever seen Orson Welles' movie classic Citizen Kane? How my heart broke for the wealthy newspaperman who traveled the world buying beautiful things that were shipped in giant crates to his vast basement, never to be opened or admired again.

The way he girded himself from the reality of his lonely existence with things, all those inanimate nothings that would eventually crumble to dust unseen.

Aren't we attempting to do this to ourselves in the "civilized" world today? Do you own your things or do they own you?

At the risk of sounding hackneyed, I'll use the phrase: If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten. If the path you're on looks like it's leading exactly where you're going and that's not where you want to go, it's time to assess your life and change course.

As in mowing the lawn and deriving the satisfaction of seeing real progress immediately--tangible proof before your eyes that something has been accomplished--a great place to begin is a Feng Shui assessment of your home.

In correcting the energy flow of your space, dying plants are especially a no-no, whether in your home or yard. Either heal it, or onto the compost pile it goes!

The cover letter said, "Competition was particularly fierce this year so (the) accomplishment is truly impressive."--I'll toast that!

Here's what Judge #39 said about BACK TO THE GARDEN. "This really is a delightful book, full of pithy, wise, fun, real, honest, short selections, each to the point and with a message one can carry away to ponder. Written by a woman who has obviously Been There, the book shares, directs, reflects wisdom and understanding at every possible turn--and quite painlessly. The writing is witty, accessible, easy and enjoyable to read, chatty or conversational, on universal subjects, what we will all encounter as we lead full lives. Dickey offers effective ideas, new fresh perspectives, techniques or tools to deal with these everyday problems or situations... The subject titles are fresh and catchy; and the interior design and cover are attractive. I like this book."

I'm also honored to mention that the book has previously won Inspirational, Spiritual, Aging, Death & Dying, and 1st Place Nonfiction awards from the IPPYs 2006, Best Books 2006 (two categories) and Atlanta Writers Club, respectively.
